The TFMP Cape to Cairo journey is an idea born from a few friends who all have wanderlust and dreamed up the ultimate African road trip. The strong desire to see more African cultures, experience more of what this beautiful continent has to offer, and a love of the open road were all contributing factors to this dream.
Is this even possible?
According to my research and the journeys of others, yes, this is entirely possible. There is a highway network that was built, being built – its there, called the Trans-African Highway Network. And through that highway network, it is entirely possible to navigate from Cape Town through a multitude of countries all the way to Cairo. Even Google Maps seems to think that this journey is possible – but Google maps will direct you to Atlantis if you ask the right questions.
“It is not down in any map; true places never are.” – Herman Melville
The journey that we have planned will cross over 12 countries and be an almost 14,000 km journey! That is a lot of time in a car, but hey, when you love driving and exploring that sounds heavenly.
How are you going to make this happen?
Well, in a simple terms – sponsorships. A trip of this length and duration will simply not be possible with personal funding (well, not someone in my economic situation). Of course each of the wanderers will have to give their own coin to the trip but it will not be possible to cover it all personally. From wheels to training and internet we will have to reach out for sponsors.
What is the end goal of this trip? Well, there will be a lot of videos, posts and trip advise that will hopefully inspire fellow Africans to interact more with their neighbouring countries instead of going abroad. Cross cultural pollination and tourism. Keeping it in the continent.
